Measuring Length

Each centimeter is divided into 10 equal divisions.  Each division is 1 millimeter. 10 divisions are 10 millimeters.

Step 1:
Align the blue ribbon along the ruler, from starting point A (0 cm) to ending point B (11 cm).

Step 2:
Record the scale with its proper standard unit.

Therefore, the blue ribbon is 11 cm long.

How about if the measurement tool you used isn't in good condition, and you have no choice to replace a good one, what can you do?

You need to do some calculation......

Step 1:
Align the blue ribbon along the ruler, from starting point A (1 cm) to ending point B (5 cm) .

Step 2:
Ending point B minus Starting point A , which is
5cm - 1cm = 4cm

Step 3:
Record the scale.

Therefore, the blue ribbon is 4 cm long.

Correct way to read or write the measurement

The eye must be positioned vertically above the mark.

If we look from the left, the measurement is over 4.8 cm while if we look from the right, the measurement is less than 4.8 cm.  Therefore, the correct way to read the measurement is 4.8 cm when we positioned our eyes vertically above the mark.

1.   The measurement is 4.9 cm.
2.   The measurement is 4.8 cm.
3.   The measurement is 4.7 cm.

  1. When measuring the length of objects, make sure it starts from the 0 mark of the ruler.
  2. When writing the measurement, don't forget to write its standard units.
  3. When reading the measurement, eyes must be positioned vertically above the mark.
